Packers already have clinched
02-03-12

GREEN BAY, Wis. Hakeem Nicks Jersey Youth. -- Facing a Detroit Lions team still playing for post-season seeding, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy will have to balance momentum with health in Sundays regular-season finale at Lambeau Field. The Packers already have clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC and have plenty of banged-up players who could use some rest. And theres no sense in unnecessarily exposing Aaron Rodgers to injury. Still, McCarthy doesnt particularly like the idea of letting a dangerous division opponent come into Lambeau and possibly gain confidence against an undermanned Packers team -- especially when theres a chance they could see the Lions again in the playoffs. McCarthy has an idea of what hed like to do in terms of resting veterans, but said he will likely wait until Sunday morning to finalize that plan. "Its important to have everybody ready to go," McCarthy said. "Weve had guys get sick Saturday night. Weve had every scenario. Weve had guys show up at the stadium breaking out in hives. You have to get ready to play the game. That will be our approach, and that wont change this week." The Lions come into the game having clinched their first playoff berth since the 1999 season. But theyre still playing for the No. 5 seed, and Lions coach Jim Schwartz seemed to rule out the possibility of resting his players this week. "I cant imagine, to sit there and say, We have accomplished a lot and anything else is gravy as you put it," Schwartz said. "(That) certainly is not our mindset. That is certainly not anybody on the teams mindset." Its a rematch of a pivotal Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit, a 27-15 Packers victory in which Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was ejected for stomping Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. The NFL subsequently suspended Suh for two games. "He called me a couple days after the whole thing happened and we talked," Dietrich-Smith said. "He said sorry, I said no big deal and that was about that." Suh expressed similar sentiments toward Dietrich-Smith this week, saying theres "no hard feelings." The Packers offensive line is in flux because of injuries, although veteran left tackle Chad Clifton is close to returning. He injured his hamstring in the Packers Oct. 9 victory at Atlanta, then hurt his back during the rehabilitation process. Right tackle Bryan Bulaga is close to returning after he sat out Sundays victory over Chicago with a sprained left knee. Among the Packers other injured players is wide receiver Greg Jennings, who is expected to sit out his third straight game with a sprained left knee. Rodgers didnt seem particularly concerned about the Packers losing momentum if McCarthy does decide to rest players. "Were the No. 1 seed," Rodgers said. "Thats enough momentum. Were going to host a home playoff game. Its tough to play in Lambeau with the crowd going and the elements. I dont think many people are too worried about potential momentum going in, knowing that we do have a bye week the first week of the playoffs." No matter what McCarthy decides, Rodgers said he wont second-guess it. "I think any player would love to play and be on the field with your guys," Rodgers said. "Its not my decision, though. Its going to be Mikes decision, his final call ultimately. Whatever he decides, well go with." The Lions have won three straight games. Matthew Stafford threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns in last weeks victory over San Diego, one week after throwing for 391 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Oakland. He hasnt thrown an interception since the Lions Dec. 4 loss at New Orleans. Stafford struggled with his accuracy while playing with a glove covering the split on his fractured right index finger, but recently has returned to playing without the glove. "The only reason I had the glove on was I had a finger splint on under it," Stafford said. "So I think the splint more than anything was the most inhibiting factor. But yeah, once its been off its felt fine and felt good." In all, the Lions face a far different scenario then they did at the end of the 2008 season, when a 31-21 loss to the Packers at Lambeau finished off their 0-16 season.
