She left the Richmond Olympic Oval on Friday afternoon brooding over her performance in the womens 1,500 and couldnt let it go all night. Frustrated that she only won bronze because teammate Kristina Groves golden skate was disqualified, she slept poorly, woke up tired and felt physically drained in the leadup to racing in the 1,000. A few short hours later all that angst was gone, and Nesbitt was atop a podium listening to O Canada. She had just become a world champion for the first time. "I was pissed off (Friday)," Nesbitt recalled shortly after collecting her gold medal. "If Kristina hadnt been disqualified I would have been fourth by one five-hundredths of a second and I feel like it always happens to me that I lose a placing by just the tiniest amount, so I was all fired up. "But as I got on the ice 20 minutes before my race, the nerves came back but it was good nerves. Like whatever happens, happens." The shift in mindset worked to perfection as the 23-year-old all-rounder from London, Ont., skated a brilliant last lap to move past German star Anni Friesinger into first place. Then she watched anxiously as Groves and Shannon Rempel failed to beat her time of one minute 16.28 seconds in the final pairing, handing her the first of three Canadian medals on the day. Friesinger was second in 1:16.32, just 0.04 behind Nesbitt, while Margot Boer of the Netherlands, the only skater in the top six to start in the outside lane, was third in 1:16.44. "I was like, thats unreal," said Nesbitt, "usually its me losing by four-hundredths." A change in fortune also came later in the day for Clara Hughes of Winnipeg and Groves in the womens 5,000, when they won silver and bronze to bring the Canadian teams total at the championships to seven (one gold, two silver, four bronze). Hughes, the defending Olympic champion who had struggled in recent months, clocked seven minutes 0.54 seconds to place second, while Groves, shaking off the DQ and a ninth-place finish in the 1,000, skated to third in 7:02.91. Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic, skating minutes after Japans Masako Hozumi mistakenly crashed into her, earned a gutsy gold in 6:57.84. "Were here to win medals," said Hughes. "We know were the best in the world and were not afraid to prove it right here at home." The hardware was especially sweet for Hughes, who won only one World Cup bronze this season. "I knew I had that race inside of me and it was just a matter of finding it," said a beaming Hughes. "All year I feel in some ways Ive been looking outside myself for the asnwers and outside myself for the technique and it was just getting worse and worse. "The last few days I looked within and thats where I found whats needed." Groves on the other hand, found the ideal way to shake off her bad luck. "I cant tell you how happy I am to have finished my four individual races like that," she said. "Considering everything thats happened the last couple of days, Im happy I found it inside myself to come up with a race like that." Nesbitt, meanwhiile, established herself as a favourite for the 2010 Olympics after winning on the same ice that will host the Winter Games next February. Ray Rice Premier Jersey And she did so just two weeks after sustaining a mild concussion in a training collision, and after making the risky decision to change her tactics just before Saturdays race. "At first I was just like, `I won, I won, thats cool," she said. "But then on the podium, I was like, `Theyre playing the Canadian anthem. A year from now, if I win, that would be incredible. ... "I havent won a lot of races before in my whole skating career, so to do it when it really counts, to just trust myself to try these new tactics in my race at a world championships, its pretty incredible." Nesbitts shift in tactics came in digging into the ice more rather than what she described as simply running atop it and not really leveraging her power. She nearly strayed from her new approach when she began lagging behind pair Laurine Van Riessen, who ended up eighth, but ended up staying the course and made up all the ground she needed with a powerful final lap. "Maybe some people would think Im crazy to try something new. But I think it really helped me," she said. "I thought it could end up being an awful race but I have to try something new. ... "Im so proud of myself for what I can do when I take the time to do it properly." Groves wasnt surprised by the result, saying usually when Nesbitt has a bad skate, she comes back the next day with an angry determination to be better. "I think thats a little bit what happened today," said Groves. "She two-armed it all the way in the
