The Boston Bruins announced Tuesday that Marc Savard is ready to return. Packers Williams Jersey. The forward has been officially cleared medically and will be in the lineup for Game One of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. "Hes an elite player and hes been chomping at the bit to play," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said. "The fact that we were able to clinch and allow time for him to get acclimated and a little practice I think is going to be very beneficial to Savvy and the team." The team received the news that Savard had been cleared on Monday, but he did not play in the Bruins series-clinching Game 6 win over the Buffalo Sabres. The Bruins will play either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Philadelphia Flyers, depending on the winner of the series between the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens. If Boston ends up playing Pittsburgh, the series will begin on Friday, and if their opponent is Philadelphia, the series is expected to start on Saturday. Savard has been out since suffering a grade-two concussion on a hit by Matt Cooke versus the Penguins back on March 7. Yet in no sport does one individual play as crucial a role in his teams success as an NHL goaltender. Goaltenders have their own coaches and their own rituals. Some are placid, some talkative; others are feisty or combative -- sometimes even with their own teammates. A goaltender can steal a game for an outmanned team. But when a goaltender fails, everyone in the building knows it. "The goalie is an individual position in a team sport," New York Islanders goaltender coach Mike Dunham told NHL.com. "Theyre out there to stop the puck and thats it, so theyre off on their own island." Role of goalie coaches grows The relationship between a goaltender and a goalie coach is more than just about finding ways to stop the puck. The off-ice part of the relationship is every bit as important as what happens on the ice. "I think its really important you have a good relationship so you can talk about everything," Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne told NHL.com. "Sometimes its not always about hockey. If something is on your mind, its a good thing if you can talk about it with your goalie coach." New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro has plenty of experience dealing with goalie coach Mike Dunham -- mainly because they played together in Dunhams final NHL season as a player in 2006-07. "We have a great relationship," DiPietro said. "He knows my game, having played with me before he retired. Its always nice to have that extra set of eyes." DiPietro considers Dunham a good friend and said its nice to have someone in your corner throughout the season. "Its huge. Especially with someone who has had the opportunity to play in the NHL," he said. "He knows the ups and downs and how hard it can be sometimes. Its nice to have a set of ears to talk to especially when youre struggling." When it comes to on-ice relationships, Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings says its very important to have a positive relationship with his goalie coach, Jim Bedard, who often is able to detect flaws in the Calder Trophy finalists game. "Goalie coaches are tremendously important," Howard said. "Goalie has become a specialized position and with a goalie coach, he can usually pick up if youre doing something wrong and he can help your game in the long run." Offseason communication is also very important -- summer may be vacation time, but that doesnt mean goalies and coaches stop talking. The communication continues, and there is a certain level of trust on each side so that when September comes around, both sides can pick up where they let off last season. "During the offseason, we talk on the phone and through e-mail," Rinne said. "Its more of a laid back version of the season. We have a good relationship and we talk about anything." --Michael Stainkamp At least goaltenders have a liittle help these days. Replicas Stanford Routt Jersey For decades, goalies were left to fend for themselves; over the last two decades, teams have added goalie coaches. Dunham, an NHL goaltender from 1996-2007, has seen the role of the goaltender coach expand. "When I first came into the League (with the Devils in 1996), I witnessed the evolution of the goalie coaches," Dunham said. "When I came in, teams had a couple of goalie coaches and I was lucky to be in New Jersey with Jacques Caron. Not every team had a goalie coach back then. Now you look and every team has one and I think its very important." The rules have changed as the game has evolved, so todays game is a lot quicker -- making it imperative that goaltenders be ready for the ever-increasing speed of the game in the NHL. They have to be ready to go side-to-side and go down and get back up in an instant -- a far cry from the days of the standup, play-the-angles style that dominated the NHL until well into the 1980s. Hence the rise of the goalie coach. "In years past, goalies were overlooked and just put in the net and told to stop pucks," Dunham said. "Now its become a position where you need certain individual coaching." Goalie coaches have drawn comparison to quarterback coaches in football because they handle a small, specialized group of players -- in the NHL, thats usually just the two goaltenders carried by most teams. With such a close relationship, success boils down to a matter of trust between player and coach. "There has to be trust," Dunham said. "Trust in the goalie to trust his goalie coach. The goalie coach has to understand what the goalie is going through during the ups and the downs of a season. The goalie has to feel that the goalie coach understands where he is coming from and what he is trying to do." Francois Allaire, regarded as one of the best goalie coaches in the world, couldnt agree more about the importance of trust in the goalie-coach relationship. "Trust is important, just like in every relationship," he told NHL.com. "The goalie has to trust the system you bring in practice and he has to trust its going to work in the game." Allaire, now with the Toronto Maple Leafs, always has high expectations for his team. But he has even higher expectations for the goalies because of the relationship they develop throughout the season. "Im always expecting my goalies to play well, so every time we start training camp (in September), its a brand new adventure and a brand new season," he said. "Im going to try to push my guys as much as I can to make sure there is a good relationship between my two goalies and make sure the two guys understand their jobs and the importance they have on this team." A good relationship, Allaire says, is important for both sides. "Its an advantage if you have a good relationship with the goalies," Allaire said. "There is a better chance to get them working for you." ' ' '
